Huy D Nguyen MD, MBA

Dr. Nguyen is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He specializes in medical and surgical retina with interests in treating patients with age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachments, macular puckers and holes, retinal vascular diseases, uveitis, ocular oncology, and retinopathy of prematurity.

His treatment philosophy begins with patient centered care, is multidisciplinary in nature, and emphasizes education and collaborative decision-making. He serves the next generation of our medical community as adjunct professor of ophthalmology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in the residency and fellowship program. Dr. Nguyen is conversationally fluent in Vietnamese and Spanish.

Education and training

Dr. Nguyen completed his bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering at the University of Texas in Austin where he pursued his interests in medical devices and imaging. Influenced by a curiosity in healthcare innovation, he completed medical school and a dual MBA at Rice-Baylor College of Medicine. He completed his ophthalmology residency in at University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and his surgical retina fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis. During this time, he published clinical research in areas including diabetic retinopathy, ophthalmic systems quality improvement, and medical devices. He connected with the San Antonio community during his residency and returned to serve his community in South Texas.

Personal notes

Dr. Nguyen and his family enjoy tennis, yoga, SA Fútbol Club, and dog-walks. He loves working toward full Spanish fluency and learning in-depth the history and culture of San Antonio.
